Shouko Komi arrives at school, and is admired by her fellow students for her beauty and stoic nature. Three girls try to confess their feelings to her, but are met with an icy stare and total silence. Unknown to everyone, Komi has a communication disorder, which makes it difficult to interact with people on a basic level, much less make friends. Only Tadano Shigeo, her acquaintance, an unremarkable boy with a knack for reading situations, understands her at all. He greets her as everyone scatters in fear, as she uneasily repeats his greeting. An easy task for some, Tadano recognizes how difficult it would've been for her to say that.

Tadano, confounded at such a strange question, explains that talking about topics like that will cause her to regret it later, a feeling that Komi is all too familiar with. Tadano suggests talking about recent occurrences, as Komi recounts the time she took half an hour to answer a doorbell and accidentally scared away a mailman, causing a fight at school by looking at a group, and glaring at a teacher.
