The Pool is the thirty-ninth chapter of Tomohito Oda's Komi Can't Communicate.

Summary

At the pool, Komi, Tadano and Najimi encounter Agari, who was not revealed to have been invited, and Yamai with her gang, Onigashima, Kishi, Chiarai, Sonoda and Shinobino, were not invited at all, and were there by "coincidence". Najimi and Tadano are uneasy about Yamai's group, and Komi becomes nervous at the sudden increase in people.

Inside the pool, Komi is excited at a new experience, with the pool in the summertime with hundreds of people. As she and Najimi head for the changing rooms, Tadano realises that Najimi doesn't identify as a girl (or anything), so they should go to the unisex rooms (Najimi acts dumb, as they're trying to lech after Komi). Yamai unfortunately is allowed in the women's changing room's, and spies on Komi is she is about to undress into her swimsuit. However, Yamai sees that Komi brought her PE suit, so she takes Komi to buy a new one.

Chiarai, Sonoda and Shinobino silently judge the girls swimsuits as they arrive at the pool, indiscriminately giving them all 10 out of 10's, as Tadano looks on incredulously at the boys. As Komi arrives with Yamai's handpicked swimsuit, the three boys, overwhelmed, give her 100 million points (or 1 bajillion, depending on which English translation you're reading). Tadano is similarly overwhelmed, as Komi, noticing this, covers up quickly.

Up at the water slide, Komi and one other required person is about to go down, as the group predictably beg and compete to go with her. As the group is arguing, Tadano, on the side-lines, is told to join Komi by the supervisor. On the way down the slide, Komi's hair gets into Tadano's face, which he secretly enjoys immensely. Komi goes down the slide another 4 times.

The whole group has a breath-holding challenge, which Komi wins by being cute, leaving everyone breathless (literally). Komi enjoys her 9 drinks, then, at Najimi's invite, runs to the diving board, but trips and gashes her knee.

Events

• Although not explicitly stated in this chapter, it is confirmed in chapter 47.5 that Komi became friends with Onigashima, Kishi, Chiarai, Sonoda and Shinobino. This event at the pool is the most likely point at which they made friends (unless it happened off-book or in chapter 40).
