Kometani Chushaku ( (こめ) (たに) (ちゅ) (しゃく) Kometani Chūshaku?) is introduced with Naruse Shisuto to commentate on the manga to the reader.

Appearance[]

Kometani has short black hair with three tufts sticking out at the top. He is generally depicted as having no mouth or nose, indicating his deadpan nature. He's described as small and cute by some other characters. He wears the standard Itan Private High School uniform.

In Chapter 201, it is revealed that he has a stunning smile when he tries.

History[]

Kometani is friends with Naruse. He also told Tadano Hitohito that Naruse is not a bad person. He translated Manbagi Rumiko's gyaru slang when she made her debut in the manga.

He often makes his appearances on the edges of panels in the manga, narrating or stating the scene. In the anime, he also usually appears in the corners of the screen for the same purpose, indicated by a doorbell-like chime. He is usually not seen speaking otherwise.

Personality[]

Kometani is best described as snarky and blunt, reacting to the events of the series in a consistently deadpan manner. His remarks, which frequently break the fourth wall (often appearing in situations where he is not physically present), generally act to inform the audience of the motivations and perceptions of other characters. However, this attitude is not one of malice: despite his frequent quips towards Naruse, he was among the first to recognize that Naruse was a good person, and encouraged Tadano to give him a chance.

Kometani is proficient at snowboarding and gaming.

Etymology[]

Kometani's family name is written with the kanji for "rice" ( kome?) and "valley" ( tani?). His given name is written with the kanji for "loyalty" ( chū?) and "explanation" ( shaku?).

Kometani's given name, Chūshaku (忠釈), is a homonym for "comment" (注釈), while his family name "Kometani" appears to be a play on the English word "commentary".

Trivia[]

  • He is favored by Gorimi in the library because his way of speaking does not register as a sound, as it is a form of narration.
  • He is the only non-gyaru shown to be able to perfectly understand them.
  • He has a preference for big girls. (Chapter 432)
    • Not only does he like big girls, he says that he likes reliable girls, (Chapter 286) and can be spotted oogling at girl’s chests, particularly Manbagi in this case, in chapters 288 (Manbagi), 196 (Isagi), and 413 (Manbagi). This may be a sign of degeneracy of some sort that we were not aware of. Yet, with all of this, he said in 286 that there is no girl that he is romantically interested in.
    • The only girl that Kometani has had said he liked in the girls group (Isagi, Ase, Manbagi, Komi) was Isagi Kiyoko for her dependibilty and her stand-offishness.
  • He has sisters. (In OG JP translation, assumably 1 sister)
  • All of his speech bubbles in the manga are square, stating that he is still narrating even though he is speaking with his vocal cords. But on Chapter 288, his speech bubble turned into a circle when he smiled and got carried away.
  • On [1]Chapter 333.5, he is titled "Kometani the Gamer".
  • He is good at video games, especially Numabros (a game in the Komi Can't Communicate universe that is a reference to the Super Smash Brothers series).
    • His MMR (Online Matchmaking Rank) is 1,105,700,000 in Numabros.
  • He sadly is part of the bunch of characters that don’t have that much personal information revealed about them to the audience. Even if he's active.
