Pre-Year 1 entails everything taking place, chronologically, before the first day of high school, in Chapter 1. This can include references, flashbacks, like Najimi's past exploits, or entire chapters focusing on past events, such as Shuuko and Masayoshi's relationship in high school.

Sometime in Elementary School - Najimi visits Nakanaka[]
- At some point in elementary school, 9-4 years before high school, Najimi visited Nakanaka's house, before she began her chunnibyou phase. In high school when they visited again, they remarked that her room changed a lot. Indeed, Nakanaka didn't have friends over since elementary school, suggesting that Najimi was the most recent, or perhaps only, visitor before high school.

2nd Year of Elementary School - Najimi meets Komi[]
- Najimi in the 2nd grade, 7-8 years before high school, met Komi for the first time. He (having somewhat identified as male during that time) tried to invite her to play, but was only given a cold, blank stare. Not aware that Komi had a communication disorder, Najimi assumed that they hated them and, in their failure, was bed-ridden for week.

- Since Komi was 12, she frequented Maki Karisu's barbershop, which she informs Kamiko Arai of in high school

- At some point in middle school, Komi and her mother, father and brother went to sing karaoke together, but only her mother sang anything. Komi wears a striped jumper, stated to be from middle school (which she was replacing with her father), at the outing.

2nd Year of Middle School - Tadano's Confession[]
- Tadano in the 2nd grade of middle school, 1-2 years before high school, went through an edgy, chuunibyou phase. He pretended to be cool and important, and picked fights with other students to impress his crush, Kawaii, the class princess. He asked Najimi (identifying as male, or at least wearing the male uniform) to help him enact "Operation L", which includes writing "LOVE" into the school field and confessing to Kawaii. She immediately rejected him, as he is going though a cringey phase of his life. Tadano decided to drop the act, and to lead an ordinary existence, which is what he does in high school.

Late July/August 3rd Year of Middle School - Najimi visits Hitomi[]
- About a year before the end of the first summer break of high school, Najimi visited, or meet up with, Hitomi, before they changed their gender from male to female (or had the appearance of female). When they meet again a year later, Hitomi notes the change in confusion.

- Before high school began, Najimi changed (or appeared to change) their gender from male to female. Since Tadano went to middle school with Najimi and is surprised at the difference in high school, either Najimi changed in the holidays before high school or left middle school early and changed then.

- Sometime in Najimi's childhood, they meet and moved away from Maa and Shii. Maa excessively missed them, and when they meet again in high school, he asked if they would go out, suggesting that when they knew each other Najimi identified as a girl, however Maa is immediately shot down.
