Summary[]
Komi Shouko, a beautiful Japanese teenage girl, has a communication disorder that makes it difficult to interact with people on a basic level, much less make friends. She begins her first year of high school at Itan Private School, and is instantly placed on a pedestal by her peers, who all assume that her silent and stoic gaze is a by-product of her superior yet praise-worthy and admirable nature. In reality, she desperately wants to make friends, but she is unable to, as her beauty creates a barrier between others. However Tadano Hitohito, a completely un-noteworthy classmate, recognises her disorder and becomes her very first friend. He helps her begin to achieve her dream of making 100 friends, some include the charismatic Najimi Osana, the skittish Agari Himiko, the competitive Yadano Makeru and the villainous, obsessive, perverted Yamai Ren.
Throughout her first year, Komi comes out her shell by going to new places, meeting new and interesting people, doing basics things she couldn't have done before, such as communicating without her notepad. She not only improves herself, but makes the people around her better (except Yamai), and opens up her feelings around other people. Her relationships strengthen, especially with Tadano, in an almost symbiotic friendship. At the beginning of her second year, a new student,Manbagi Rumiko, a former gyaru who was helped by Komi and Tadano to accept herself and her appearance.
Komi, Tadano and Manbagi develop a close friendship with each other, Manbagi develops feeling for Tadano due to his kind and good natured heart, as Komi develops similar feelings. Komi and Manbagi both discover they both have a crush on Tadano, but still preserves their friendship. Manbagi confesses to Tadano, who reciprocates, but admits that he likes Komi. Manbagi supports him, and urges him to confess to Komi. Komi admits her love for Tadano's kindness, and they begin a formal relationship.
Timeline by chapter[]
Early April - First Day of High School and Tadano meets Komi[]
- Tadano Hitohito, incredulous that he got into a prestigious school like Itan Private High School, vows to not become a big presence and instead lead a quiet, normal experience. His plans quickly go awry when he tries to greet Komi Shouko, a beautiful girl in his class, and only receives stammers and a cold, intense stare. He is puzzled, but surmises that he will have nothing to do with her, as she is way out of his league. However, he doesn't notice that he is seated next to her in the classroom, and receives heated, murmured threats from his classmates. Due to Komi's beauty and goddess like demeanour, she has quickly earned a reputation as being untouchable, and to the school, someone average like Tadano being near Komi is a blasphemy idea. Tadano gives an embarrassing introduction, as his classmates stare hatefully.
- Later during the day, Tadano is knocked unconscious by a crowd of Komi worshippers, and awakens to find himself alone with her. Embarrassed, Komi runs to leave, but Tadano asks if she has difficulty communicating with people. Tadano second guesses himself, but Komi confirms it with a nod and more stammers. Komi, via chalkboard, elaborates on her condition, and how difficult it is to make friends. Tadano understands that Komi isn't a god or a celebrity, but just a normal girl.
- Komi apologies to Tadano for wasting his time, but Tadano continues the conversation on the chalkboard. As they write, they begin to bond together, and Komi reveals her dream of making 100 friends. Tadano says that he'll be her first friend, and that he'll help her make 99 more. He quickly apologies, but Komi accepts his friendship. Overcome by emotion, she bolts out of the classroom, as Tadano is convinced to help cure Komi's condition. However, Tadano doesn't realise that Itan Private High School is home to many strange and quirky individuals, and making new friends will be difficult.

April - Helping Komi make her 2nd Friend[]
- Tadano attempts to make Komi practise the phrase "Let's be friends", with minimal success. Tadano thinks that if he asks people to be her friends, they will jump at the chance and 100 of them will be quickly made. However, when he tries to ask Yamai Ren, a sweet girl and the leader of the cool group, she whispers insults in his ear, and tells him how undeserving he is of her friendship, much less to sit next to her or even speak her name. Yamai quickly re-applies her cutesy façade, as Tadano tactfully retreats. As he is unpopular, trying to get people to make friends with Komi will be almost impossible, so, out of options, he goes to his old friend Najimi Osana, an extremely sociable extrovert and the opposite of Komi. Ambiguous gender (although currently "identifying" as a "she"), pathological liar, and, most importantly, friends, friends of friends, or friends of friends of friends with essentially all of the country and potentially others too. Getting them to become friends of Komi should be a cinch. However, when Tadano asks for Komi, Najimi refuses.
- Komi goes into shock, as Tadano takes Najimi out of the classroom to interrogate them. Najimi explains that they met Komi back in 2nd grade (when they were 7-8 years old, and also when "she" identified as a "he"), and when they offered their friendship, Komi only stared coldly back, The shock to Najimi had them bedridden for a week. Najimi harbours no ill will, but when they lock eyes, Najimi trembles in fear. Tadano convinces Najimi to give Komi another chance, as they tease him as to if he likes Komi, but Tadano assures them that they are incompatible. Najimi also tells Tadano to call them Najimi, their given name, instead of Osana, their last name, as they were friends for a long time back in school. They also allude to the time Tadano got rejected back in middle school.
- Najimi and Komi walk home after school, with Tadano following behind in support. All of Najimi's attempts to communicate fail, as they discreetly text Tadano that they give up trying to be Komi's friend. Suddenly, two delinquents and old friends of Najimi's, Maa-Kun and Shii-Chan, rush up to the pair and Maa-Kun, a very large and burly teen, confesses to Najimi, but is instantly rejected as they claim to be a boy. Unfazed, Maa-Kun grabs Najimi without their consent as they ask to be let go, as Komi touches Maa-Kun on his shoulder. Komi tries to tell him that his key fell out his pocket, but Maa-Kun misinterprets her words as a threat against his life for touching Najimi, as he and Shii-Chan run away. Najimi, thankful that they were saved, agrees to be Komi's friend and Komi silently celebrates.

April - Standbakes and making a 3rd Friend[]
- At school, Najimi eats lunch with Komi, to her immense joy. Najimi, scheming, asks Komi to get her an extremely complicated drink from Standbakes (Starbucks parody), and if she doesn't, Najimi will no longer be her friend. Komi agrees, as Najimi explains to Tadano that doing things outside her comfort zone is good for her. Komi successfully enters Standbakes, but being unable to communicate Najimi's order, the barista gets it wrong as he tries to guess and Komi takes the drink without correcting him. Komi gives Najimi the wrong drink, and almost cries from her failure, as Najimi and Tadano apologise profusely.
- Najimi next tries to help Komi get more friends and, from a selection that includes the entire student body, confirms that Agari Himiko is the closest to Komi in terms of personality traits, being introverted and nervous. Komi followed Agari to the library but couldn't ask her to become friends. Agari runs to the toilets as Komi follows, concerned for her well-being. As Agari continually escapes Komi, she is asked by a teacher to inform the class that gym period has changed location and, eager to leave Komi's presence, Agari perfectly repeats the instruction. Afterwards, Tadano assures Komi that she'll have another chance to talk to Agari as, speak of the devil, she appears. She thanks Komi for unintentionally helping her to come out of her shell, by terrifying her into reciting an instruction to the class. As Tadano suggests becoming friends, Agari refuses as Komi is much beyond her, but agrees to be her dog, metaphorically.
- (Chapters 12, 13, 14)
April 14th, Mid/Late April - New Flip Phone, Class President and games[]
- Komi shows Tadano her new flip-phone, albeit an outdated model, that she got from her parents that morning. She wants her friends phone numbers, but when Tadano offers to help her, she refuses, saying that she's too reliant on Tadano (Tadano is very proud of Komi). She gets Najimi's relatively easily, but Agari takes a while and when she does, she accidentally tells Tadano that Komi wanted his number to be first in her contacts, as he was her first friend. Tadano obliges, as neither of them can make eye-contact from embarrassment.
- At school, the position of class president is being decided, and Komi is an immediate candidate for the people in the room. Komi doesn't want the fame and attention, so Tadano is about to volunteer himself, but Najimi beats him to it. As the class threatens Najimi with bodily harm and/or death, Najimi explains that the title of class president is not prestigious enough, and that Komi deserves a higher title. The class agrees, and eventually decide on class Goddess, much to Komi's embarrassment. With a void to fill with class president, the class quickly concurs on Tadano, as Komi already has the highest position, effectively forcing him into the most difficult position with none of the benefits.
- At Komi's home, Komi plays with her new flip phone, practises calling people, but accidentally rings Tadano. She quickly hangs up out of embarrassment, and when Tadano calls her back to make sure she's ok, she pretends to be an answering machine and hangs up again. Tadano exclaims that her voice is beautiful, as his sister tells him to keep the noise down. Komi is overjoyed and embarrassed at making her first call, as her brother tells her to keep it down as well.
- At school during lunch, Najimi, Yamai and a group of popular kids play a game together, as Komi watches and wants to join in. Tadano suggests having a game after school with Najimi and Agari, but Najimi overhears the conversation and invites Komi to join the current game, which the participants are overjoyed at the idea of. Najimi teases Tadano as to if he's going to let Komi struggle/get embarrassed, so he decides to join the game as well. When he asks, the group happily agrees, but Tadano, being a master reader, can tell that they hate him and only let him join because Komi is there. Komi quickly loses a game, but the group allows her to win the next one. Najimi introduces a punishment for the next game, whoever loses has to show their "kissy face". The group, determined to win and see Komi's kissy face, collaborate, leaving only Tadano and Komi. As the game requires communication, Komi will not be able to win, so all Tadano has to do is speak his turn. Although he wants to see Komi's kissy face, he saves her from the embarrassment by intentionally losing, having to show his own kissy face. Komi later thanks him for saving her, and says that she had fun regardless of almost being humiliated.
- (Chapters 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
May - Physical Examinations and Fitness Tests[]
- Physical tests are happening at school, and Yadano Makeru, a fairly average student, vows to beat Komi, as the honour that would come from defeating the (supposed) most powerful student in school would be immense (she is also very competitive). Komi, oblivious to Yadano's duel, "beats" them in all categories, but Yadano concludes that they tied with some questionable logic. At the 50M track, Yadano passionately gives it her all, but still loses to Komi regardless. Yadano humbly accepts defeat and goes to shake Komi's hand, but when she doesn't take it, Yadano assumes that Komi wants her to improve, and that she sees her as a formidable opponent. Yadano promises to better herself, and declares herself as Komi's rival, to Komi's and Tadano's confusion.
- (Chapters 20, 21)
May - Visiting Komi's House[]
- At school, Najimi talks excessively with Tadano and Komi, before dropping a killer question, which was if they could come to Komi's house. Komi is conflicted, especially when Najimi suggests that Tadano comes, but accepts. At Komi's they meet her mother for the first time, who, unlike her daughter, is extroverted and energetic. Najimi claims that they need the toilet, but spies outside Komi's room, leaving her and Tadano alone together. After 15 minutes of no awkward or suggestive activities, Najimi comes back in, bewildered. Najimi rummages through her books and her photo album of her childhood. Tadano notes that in all the photos Komi is alone, without any friends. After Tadano and Najimi leave, Najimi sends a photo of the 3 of them that they took in secret, which Komi buys a photo frame for.
- (Chapter 22)
May - Tadano Kidnapped and becoming "Friends" with Yamai[]
- Tadano walks to school, thinking about his friendship with Komi, when he is attacked by an unseen assailant. Yamai walks to school, and silently declares that she has a crush on Komi. However in Yamai's case, her crush is more of a stalker-like obsession, licking her hairs and smelling her aroma. She tries to say good morning to her, but is interrupted by Agari. Agari looks behind her to see Yamai giving off a demonic look, and she runs away, terrified. Yamai tries again, but is again interrupted, by Najimi this time. Yamai finally says good morning, but even when Komi doesn't respond, Yamai is overcome with misplaced joy. Yamai sweetly invites Najimi around a corner.
- Yamai, throwing Najimi against a wall, demands to know their relationship with Komi, to which they respond, fearfully, that their just friends. Yamai ominously asks Najimi to introduce her to Komi. Najimi, literally and metaphorically backed up against a wall, agrees. When they introduce her, Komi can only stare, and Yamai, in love, wants to do various things with/to Komi, but restrains herself. When Yamai asks Komi to have lunch together, Komi imagines Tadano encouraging her, and agrees with a nod. After Yamai leaves, Najimi and Komi wonder where Tadano has gone to, as he is absent from school. It is revealed that Tadano has been kidnapped and tied up, in a darkened room in an unknown location. He sees many photos of Komi, including some on the ceiling, and confirms that he is in Yamai's room.
- Back at school, Najimi asks if them and Komi can go to Yamai's house after school (possibly due to suspicion). Yamai briefly considers her prisoner, but agrees at the thought of Komi's scent lingering on her bed. When they arrive, Yamai says she needs to tidy her room, but secretly threatens to bury Tadano alive if he makes any noise, and leaves him in the cupboard. When Najimi and Komi enter, Tadano, hearing Najimi's voice, bangs on the cupboard. Yamai leaves to make "tea", and Najimi opens the cupboard to reveal Tadano. Yamai returns with a knife, explaining to Komi that she kidnapped Tadano for her, and that he was in the way of their friendship. She cruelly elaborates that Tadano is unremarkable and doesn't deserve to be around Komi, and that Komi should hang around cool and popular people like Yamai. Komi shakes her head, to Yamai's shock. As the trio go to leave Yamai, she blocks the door, knife in hand. Komi writes with her notepad that she will choose her own friends, and leaves. Yamai sobs in her wake, as Najimi, having stayed behind, wonders what to do in terror.
- The next day at school, Komi and Tadano sit in silence, until Komi asks Tadano to talk alone. Komi talks (via notepad) about how Tadano was kidnapped yesterday, and how it was her fault for being close with him. She wonders what could have happened, and that how something like this could happen again. She sadly suggests that they shouldn't be friends anymore, but Tadano, quoting Komi, says that he will choose his own friends. Komi says, for the first time intentionally, in person, that she still wants to be Tadano's friend. Both are embarrassed by this, but Najimi abruptly interrupts with Yamai. Yamai gives a poor apology to Tadano, which he accepts, and a more genuine one to Komi, which she responds, via notepad, with a simple "OK". Yamai takes this as a sign that Komi hates them, and produces a knife aimed towards herself. Tadano explains that Komi has difficulty communicating, but Yamai finds this adorable, and hopes that she'll become friends with Komi. Komi agrees, as Yamai promises to help fix her disorder (a word that Tadano was deliberately avoiding).
- (Chapters 23, 24, 25, 26)
June - Ramen, telling Jokes and walking in the Rain[]
- Komi, Tadano and Najimi go to a ramen restaurant, as it was always Komi's dream to visit one. Agari accompanies them, as she is secretly knowledgeable on ramen, and her whole demeanour changes when discussing it. In Ramen Darou, there are many iron-clad rules, such as not talking or being disrespectful, all of which Komi easily obliges by. Komi, having enjoyed herself, wants to come again, and the group make a habit of it, despite Tadano and Najimi eating way too much food.
- At school, Komi nervously gives Tadano a letter, containing a poorly written, out of context joke. Komi explains that on TV she saw that laughter helps build relationships, as Tadano explains that jokes aren't as funny when they're not spoken aloud. Komi leaves the room, and calls Tadano on her phone, stammering another dad joke, which she seems insistent on. When Najimi tells Tadano to tell a better joke, he tells a similarly cringeworthy one, but Komi is impressed regardless.
- Tadano finishes a student council meeting, from which Najimi took off early, and encounters Komi in the locker room. When he asks why she's still at school, she claims that she lost track of time. Tadano sees that "Phantom Thief N" took his umbrella, and it's raining outside. Tadano assures Komi that he'll call his parents, but she offers her umbrella to share, which he accepts after some deliberation. Tadano offers to hold Komi's umbrella, and when he does she notices that he's giving more cover for her, as his shoulder is wet from the rain. At the convenience store, Tadano theorizes that Komi waited for him after reading Najimi's note to share her umbrella. Komi can't make eye-contact, confirming it, as Tadano yells in joy
- (Chapters 28, 29, 30)
June - Making a Sixth Friend and Tadano in Junior High[]
- An anti-social student, Omoharu Nakanaka, arrives at school and notices Komi's beauty, so she walks past, and pretends to be under the influence of a powerful mystical force. She claims that herself and Komi knew each other in past lives, and that they need to make a blood pact to stop the world ending (Nakanaka is a chuunibyou). Komi believes her (or is at least interested) and wants to know more. Nakanaka, embarrassed, briefly tries to explain but gives up, disregarding the question and urgently demanding a blood contract. She leaves for the infirmary due to her "evil eye" (pink eye) as Najimi and Tadano confusedly watch her leave. Tadano suggests to Komi that Nakanaka might want to become friends, in her own strange way.
- Later during PE, people are partnering up for exercises and as usual, people are scrambling to pair up with Komi. Nakanaka watches, mocking them for their hubris. She declares that she doesn't need or want a partner, as her "powers" are too great, but Nakanaka sadly considers why no-one wants to pair with her. As she sulks, Komi comes up behind her and, after accidentally scaring her, offers to be her partner. After the exercises, she awkwardly tries to thank Komi, but decides to reapply her masquerade and "reveals" herself as an evil dragon lord. As Komi looks in confusion, Nakanaka embarrassedly decides to "spare" Komi from being a slave.
- Najimi explains to Komi about what a chunnibyou is, and how Tadano was one in middle school and how Nakanaka is going through the phase currently, as Tadano sits in mortified shock.
- (Chapters 31, 32)
June - Shopping and a Haircut[]
- Komi reveals that she has never been clothes shopping, and that she rarely leaves her house on the weekends or holidays. Najimi suggests going after school, but Komi is scared of new environments, especially when Najimi "needs" Tadano to come as an interpreter, which he agrees to reluctantly. Najimi also invites Agari, and Yamai tags along, uninvited, after she overhears the conversation. At the mall, Najimi invokes an outfit battle, where everyone chooses clothes for Komi. Agari and Yamai's choices are too dorky or too revealing, and Komi rates them poorly. Najimi's first choice, a form-fitting Chinese dress, performs averagely, and her second choice, a modest dress and blouse, is received well. But Tadano's choice, a simple white dress (which he noticed Komi looking at earlier), is universally acclaimed and the outfit that Komi bought.
- At home, Komi is reading fashion magazines and examining the dress that Tadano choose for her, as she considers getting a haircut. After some deliberation, she makes up her mind. At the beauty salon, newcomer Kamiko Arai aspires to be like her dignified, professional boss, Karisu Maki. She tries inviting Komi inside the salon, but Komi trembles in fear, until Karisu addresses her by name and invites her. Arai wonders if something about her put Komi off, like her smile or her smelly armpits. As Komi gets her hair cut, Arai tries to interact with her, to no avail. At the checkout, Komi points to the words "Thank You" on a magazine, and leaves without another word. Karisu explains that Komi simply finds it difficult to talk to other people, as Arai realises that it wasn't something to do with her. At school the next day, Najimi, Agari and Yamai all greet Komi, but don't notice her haircut. Only Tadano notices, causing Komi to blush. The other girls are ashamed and incredulous that they didn't notice.
- (Chapters 33, 34)
Early/Mid July - Worries, Studying and Tests:[]
- At Komi's house, during the night, Komi is kept up from various conversations she had where her anxiety made it difficult to communicate properly. Points included not answering quickly, being unfunny, being awkward, but during a conversation with Agari she remembered Tadano telling her about a time when he also misunderstood someone. This makes Komi feel better about her disorder, and she falls asleep quickly.
- At school, Najimi is depressed that exams are approaching, so they suggest studying together, but Tadano recognises that they have no intention of that and will just muck around. Najimi, Tadano and Komi visit the library, where Najimi is smacked on the head by the chief librarian, Gorimi, for being too loud. Agari explains that if 3 smacks are received, they will be kicked out of the library. As Tadano and Komi study, Najimi tries to get Tadano to laugh, getting a second smack in the process. Najimi starts playing Jungle (Jenga parody), as Komi unexpectedly joins in. Tadano, bowing to peer pressure, tries to remove a block, but topples the tower, as everyone receives a smack as a consequence (Najimi got 3 smacks, so was taken out of the library). Tadano apologies to Komi for getting them smacked, but Komi says that it was fun and that she enjoyed playing the game. They promptly leave the library to find Najimi.
- After the exams, the test results are back, with Komi performing extremely well, Tadano scoring perfectly average, as usual, and Najimi performing well despite not studying (due to their natural intelligence). Yadano peeks at Komi's results, and sees to her frustration that Komi beat her again, by a substantial amount.
- (Chapters 35, 36)
Late July- Going to the Pool[]
- At home during the holidays, Komi has finished all her school homework, and is bored that she hasn't left the house in the week of summer break that has passed. She wants to call friends to organise something, but lacks the courage to make one. Tadano is in a similar situation, but has played games and read books instead of studying. He deliberates calling Komi, and accurately hypothesises that she would be wanting to call her friends, but can't muster up the nerve, like himself. Suddenly his phone rings, to his shock. At Komi's, she tries calling Tadano, but the number is busy, after which she gets a call herself, from Najimi. They invite Komi to the pool, to which Tadano is going as well (Najimi called Tadano, which is why his number was busy). Komi accepts, and she and Tadano silently celebrate being invited out.
- On the day of the trip, Komi nervously packs her bag several times, making sure she hasn't forgotten anything. She arrives at the train station half an hour early, waiting for Najimi and Tadano. When they arrive, they compliment Komi's dress (the one Tadano picked out for her), making her blush.
- Outside the pool, Agari arrives, whom Najimi forgot they invited, and Yamai and her gang arrive shortly after, whom Najimi definitely didn't invite. The sudden increase in people makes Komi nervous. She and Najimi go to change, but Tadano stops Najimi, as they aren't technically "female", and sends them to the mixed changing rooms. Yamai, however, is subject to no technicalities and enters the female change rooms with Komi, and watches her from a short distance for her changing. However when Yamai sees that Komi is going to wear her school swimsuit and, disappointed in her unstylish choice, takes Komi to buy another one. Outside, Chiarai, Sonoda and Shinobino judge girls swimsuits as Tadano watches them in confusion. They indiscriminately give Najimi, Agari, Yamai, Onigashima and Kishi 10 out of 10s, but when Komi arrives, they give her 100 million points. Komi rides a slide with Tadano (to the groups anger and jealously) and, having enjoyed it so much, rides it 4 more times.
- Najimi invites Komi and Agari to swim in the endless river, as Tadano notices Yamai and company following them underwater, presumably to perve on Komi.
- Next, the group has a breath holding competition, which Komi wins easily by being cute. Najimi excitedly runs to the diving board, as Komi quickly follows, against Tadano's better judgement. As she runs, she trips and grazes her knee on the pavement, to everyone's shock.
- Komi leaves the medical bay, fine physically but unable to go back into the pool. The group considers going home, but Komi insists that they don't worry about her and keep having fun. Najimi, understanding that Komi will feel guilty if she ruins the day, leads the group to the lazy river. Komi guards the bags by herself, but still feels lonely despite wanting the group to keep doing things at the pool. Eventually, Tadano returns for a break, and assures Komi that everyone won't hate her for spoiling the mood. When Komi feels that she hates herself, Tadano throws water into her face, and invites her into the shallow pool to cheer her up. As Komi tries to stand up, Tadano reaches out, taking her hand and pulling her up. Realising that he's holding her hand, he quickly withdraws and stammers, as Komi curiously stares at him. Najimi, with a water gun, shoots Tadano and Komi, inviting them to play together, which they do with the whole group. On the way home on the train, Komi sleeps, as Yamai lustfully rests on her shoulder.

August - Library and Shaved Ice with Dad[]
- Komi nervously goes to the library for the first time during the holidays, where she decides to take out a book. When she can't approach the checkout, she sits down to calm herself. A baby next to her starts crying, then stops and trembles fearfully at Komi's icy stare. Komi forces a smile with her fingers, as the baby relaxes and waves Komi goodbye as he and his mother leave the library. Tadano, who was returning a book, smiles to himself at seeing something heart warming (he left as he forgot his errand).
- As Komi reads her book from the library at home, her father enters and silently communicates with his daughter. Without a word spoken, they somehow decide to get shaved ice together, to Shuuko's confusion and amazement. At the ice cream parlour, strangers wonder if the two are fighting, as they are not speaking to each other at all. As they order, Komi's dad wants to ask her how school is going, but he, like his daughter, has difficulty communicating. As they eat he manages to ask his question, to his satisfaction. Komi avoids eye contact and glooms as if to suggest that high school is going poorly, but quickly brightens up, as she was just joking. Dad, relieved, ruffles her hair, as they share a smile together.

August - Part-time Job and Playing at the Park[]
- Najimi calls Komi to ask her for help for their part-time tissue-handing job, as everyone else was too busy (along with a bear mascot). As Najimi effectively and confidently hands out many tissues, Komi is inspired and tries to follow suit, but she can't communicate vocally with any of the strangers and just stammers around pointlessly. Komi eventually musters up courage, and when she hands out a tissue, bystanders notice and flock to her, quickly receiving tissues. Throughout the day, Komi was unaware that Tadano was actually in the bear costume, sweltering due to the heat. As Komi makes her way home, she passes by a playground, and gives in to temptation. She uses swings, slides and various other pieces of equipment, and a water fountain, as she makes sure no-one is watching. Tadano rides home, annoyed at Najimi for not telling him that he'd have to wear a bear costume, and passes Komi, who, embarrassed at being seen in a children's playground, runs home.

Mid August - Obon at Grandma's[]
- Komi, her mother, father and her brother leave for the countryside to visit Grandma Yuiko for Obon. Throughout the drive, everyone apart from Shuuko is completely silent, a typical Komi family drive. When they arrive, they pay respect to their ancestors, and greet stern Grandma Yuiko, chipper Aunt Ryoko and stoic Uncle Sadayoshi. Komi also finds cousin Akira, who is frightened of Komi and shy as they haven't meet for a while. When Komi accidently scares Akira, she tickles her to bring them them closer. Akira follows Komi around the house (including the bathroom) and suggests playing a board game. When Komi agrees, Akira breaks down into tears of joy, as Komi would usually just stare silently at any suggestions. Komi is later required to report past events to Grandma, passing dad on the way, who was seemingly treated harshly. Grandma asks about school, and if she has made any friends yet, and if there's a boy she likes. From Komi's reaction, Grandma immediately becomes suspicious and checks her phone, seeing Tadano's contact and disapproving, to Komi's distress.

Mid August - Summer Festival[]
- Tadano is waiting alone at a summer festival wearing a yukata, at Najimi's demand. Komi shortly arrives, also wearing a yukata, the sight of which stuns Tadano, which worries her. Tadano insists that she looks fine, and silently curses Najimi for not mentioning that Komi was coming. Komi looks for her notepad, and realises that she forgot it. Najimi arrives with a massive crowd, as Komi and Tadano get swept up. Komi tries to talk, but can only stammer, which Tadano considers if she's worried about her notepad. Both being awkward today, they take turns sharp shooting, Tadano being unable to concentrate with Komi staring at him, for some reason. After fuelling Najimi's gambling addiction with candy cutting, Komi manages to declare that Tadano looks good too. Initially confused, Tadano realizes that Komi was referring to his yukata, when they first meet at the festival, and that she was unable to say it.
- Yamai and her gang arrive at the festival, Yamai quickly passing out at the sight of Komi in a yukata. Najimi suggests drawing lots, another instance of their gambling addiction, attempting to win a PS4, but only getting tissues. Tadano also receives tissues, while Komi, not thinking of any strategy and not falling for the shopkeepers tricks, pulls a random rope, winning the PS4. Later, as they walk through the festival, Komi lags behind, almost in tears, as Tadano goes back to find her. He assures her that she can just call them with her phone, which she didn't consider. Too far behind now, they wait for them to circle back around together. Tadano declares that it was fun hanging out in a big group, Komi writes with a stick in the dirt that she enjoyed spending time with just him too. Embarrassed, she rapidly erases the message before he can read it.
- After the festival, the group hangs out in a diner, as Komi writes in a notepad her 11/100 friends she has amassed.

Late August - Videogames at Nakanaka's and Making Meatloaf[]
- Komi, at home, receives a verbose email from Nakanaka, inviting her over to her house. Nakanaka is overjoyed when Komi agrees, and waits at her door for when she arrives. Komi is captivated by the various geek items strewn about her room, and is shown the climax of a videogame, which outwardly she doesn't appear to be interested in. Nakanaka, desperate for Komi's approval, invites Najimi over, (who hasn't visited since elementary school) and brings Tadano along. The group play Swamp Bros. together, as Najimi immediately tries to attack Komi, while Nakanaka defends. Tadano teaches Komi how to play, as she walks into mud and accidentally slaps Tadano. Komi unintentionally throws mud into Najimi's eyes, who is violently taken down by Nakanaka. Nakanaka is overjoyed at winning, while Najimi is devastated.
- Komi groggily awakens on a boiling hot day, without an air conditioner in her room. She goes to the living room, only to fall asleep on the couch for a half hour. She lounges about, eating, reading fashion magazines (a new hobby), and pesters her brother. Later, on TV, she sees meatloaf cooking, and gets inspired, insisting she makes it herself. At dinner, as her family eats, Komi nervously awaits their reactions, to her satisfaction she receives 3 thumbs up.
